#32 Do You Want A Drink?

Hey there,

This one is about picturing the audience naked.

There’s a lot of unsought uncertainty when you’re meeting someone new, isn’t there? Or is it only my will-less stance? Anyhoo, different gatherings call for different skepticisms and I’ll explain my unproven claims in a bit.

I know that if I’m squarely in the middle of a party, socializing is a given. It is a level playground where each attendee is there with one purpose alone - to have a good time. No ulterior motives, no agendas, nada, only the common goal of having some fun. There are no labels. I could meet the CEO of Apple and not think twice about offering him a drink. Man’s there to let loose.

However, and this is where it gets tricky. Every time I meet a new person for the purpose of ‘work’, there is an unforgivable amount of introspection. ‘How should I start?’, ‘What should I say?’, ‘What if they reject my proposal?’, ‘What if they don’t like me?’

That’s because there is an agenda now. The basic, customary tradition is the same. It’s only two people meeting each other to gauge their compatibilities and their need for each other, eventually building a long-term relation in the process. But the mindset is different.

So this is what I do now. Every time I meet someone new, in my mind, I’m offering them a drink, regardless of what their position is. This is my version of picturing the audience naked.

I’ve sweat long enough to ultimately realise there was no point after all. And I nudge you to try it too!
