#6 Work Around The Vacation

Hey there,

This one is about changing perspectives.

I once knew a man who planned his whole work schedule around his time off and not the other way around. It was fascinating to see this guy live like he was going to retire at any moment. And that really showed me a different perspective on how so many different people live their lives. One of the first realizations was - this could be done! Because I’m not talking about someone who lived paycheck to paycheck… he was doing good in life.

He had no financial help from anyone. He didn’t have an inheritance. He didn’t have a family business. He was working, like a normal guy would. He wasn’t living like a normal guy though.

See, he spent on things that mattered to him and this primarily worked because he was a bachelor as well, so there was a loophole somewhere but I know of many bachelors who don’t do this.

He started working from home long before COVID-19 changed the rules and by doing that, he had control over how hard and smart he worked at any given point of time. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what he was doing. He just didn’t care what people thought of him.

He had a fairly simple home and because he could work from anywhere, he chose the cheapest suburbs. He saved before he spent. His vacations took priority over unnecessary expenditure on a want. He didn’t need to show people his wealth, he was happy within. While his colleagues paid loans on the cars they had bought and the houses they had taken to settle down, he roamed about free - his money either invested in liquid assets or spent on short but amazing vacations.

“It doesn’t take a lot to do what I’m doing. I love it, someone else might not. I’m ambitious, definitely but I also want to live life while I’m physically able to,” that’s what he used to tell me.

And I somehow understood what he meant. I didn’t agree with much of it but that’s just me. But what I’m glad about is that I can share how he lives to let others know that it can be done. It’s not that difficult.
